Reflecting back on another amazing residency week in Waco for the PhD in Preaching at Baylor University’s Truett Seminary. I’m starting to catch the rhythm of these intensive weeks. While I was in Waco I got to attend a Baylor Libraries Author Series event for the book “We Follow Christ.” This book continues to move the needle on women’s participation in God’s calling by sharing the stories of women pursuing ministry in different fields, both secular and sacred. The panel discussion by the editors gave a strong argument for why this book is necessary right now. Women need to see other women following God in different spaces to gain an imagination for all that is possible, and encouragement to keep going when it’s difficult. Had an amazing three days at the 2025 Evangelical Homiletics Society meeting. Lift Every Voice was the theme and I am so thankful to the professors and staff at @truettseminary for their commitment to seeing minoritized voices in preaching unmuted. It was great to finally meet the other PhD students in the program and reconnect with the ones I already know. I felt welcome and wanted and I’m already excited about next year! If you know me, you know I LOVE resources that help us understand women of the Bible. They aren’t just static characters on the page but active participants in God’s mission of bringing salvation to the world. This book takes the women you are familiar with AND some lesser known women of the OT and brings them to life through insights into Hebrew and cultural context. I am so excited to be in this program and so thankful for the warm welcome I’ve received here. Although I’d never met her before @gerber.alison welcomed me to her home for the week and we are forever friends now! Loved meeting up with internet friends like @rcallahanwaco and now out celebrating with ice cream and Friday night lights at the end of a long week. Looking forward to coming back in November! 1 down, 11 to go! Summer was an excellent opportunity to rest and recharge after five years of nonstop masters degrees. Now, I’m back to school at @baylorgraduate @truettseminary to begin a PhD in Preaching where I will explore spiritual trauma for the next four years. Finished the ThM! I graduated from the MATS at the Charlotte campus last year with my NetEd family and this year worked out better schedule-wise to go to Hamilton. Thankful my husband (my biggest supporter) was able to make the trip with me. It was wonderful to see professors that I’ve had throughout the years that are based at the main campus. I also got to see many of my Greek students who traveled to meet me at the airport, for lunch, or ice cream. One dear fellow student even hosted me over night. Such a wonderful trip filled with good conversations and a lot of hugs. I kept saying “have we really never met in person?” or giving hugs and saying “oh! every one is three dimensional.” The relationships I’ve made with these folks online are very real and it was so wonderful to celebrate with them. It’s surreal that my journey as a student at Gordon-Conwell has come to an end. Endlessly thankful for how God used this seminary and its people to shape my mind and heal my heart. Total surprise today! I found out my article on Argula von Grumbach (in Mutuality Magazine) won an award from the Evangelical Press Association. So honored! PhD Update! About a month ago I posted about how all my PhD applications were rejected. matthew.d.kim happened to see my post and reached out about the Truett/Baylor PhD in preaching. After investigating it I determined it probably wouldn’t work out, and after all, how could I do a PhD in preaching without any full time ministry experience?
